These masks depict a major Aztec preoccupation: the passage of time. Each layer shows a stage of a human's life: youth, adulthood and old age and death. The masks were traditionally worn during ceremonial events or placed upon graves. Approx: 9cm × 12cm × 3cm. The death masks had open mouths and were placed on the faces of dead nobles. The masks would also be worn during certain ceremonies by a priest in an attempt to gain the attention of the gods, also with hope that the gods would recognize them as important. .
